The cruise ships of today are intriguing in their modernity. They are comparable to inland towns located on the coast. Have you ever pondered the question of how much it costs to construct a cruise ship? However, it took more than one day to build Rome.
- In point of fact, the construction of these magnificent palaces of the seas requires a significant investment of both time and money.
- How much does it set you back to construct a luxury cruise ship? It is possible to build a cruise ship at a total cost that is projected to be slightly less than $200 million US.
Having said that, it’s possible for a cruise ship to be valued more than a billion dollars. Everything is determined by a number of different criteria, some of which are the materials and the facilities, among many others. Keep reading to find out more about the price of constructing a cruise ship, including the price of constructing some of the most costly cruise ships in the world.
How much does it cost to have a cruise ship built?
How Much Does It – How Much Does It Cost to Build a Cruise Ship? The construction of a new cruise ship will typically begin at a cost of around $550 million. The cost of the most costly cruise ships is greater than one billion dollars. Cruise ships that can accommodate 2,000 to 3,000 passengers often cost close to one billion dollars each.
The price of a cruise vacation is determined by a number of different aspects, such as the ship’s size, its facilities, and its ambiance. When building a new cruise ship, mainstream cruise companies like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line frequently spend more than $800 million.
The Oasis class of ships owned by Royal Caribbean International ranges in price from $1.2 million to $1.4 million each individual ship in the fleet. (This picture was provided by Carnival Cruise Line.) The Carnival Celebration was first introduced in 2022 and set the company back one billion dollars.
The Norwegian Prima made its premiere in the same year at a cost of around 850 million dollars. One such method of analyzing cost is to contrast the whole expenditure with the total number of beds (berths). This is the way that cruise lines prefer to use when comparing the overall cost to the number of passengers.
For instance, the Oasis of the Seas had a construction cost of around $250,000 per berth. And the cost per berth for Carnival’s Mardi Gras was almost $189,000. Luxury cruise lines often operate significantly smaller ships compared to other cruise lines.
They may also be constructed for a lower price than a megaship. A deluxe cruise ship, on the other hand, will have a greater cost-to-berth ratio. This is due to the fact that high-end services and furnishings are standard on luxury cruise ships. These aspects contribute to a relative cost that is greater than that of conventional cruise lines.
(Silversea Cruises is responsible for the image.) The construction of the luxury cruise ship Silver Dawn, operated by Silversea, set the company back $380 million. The ship had a capacity for 576 passengers, and the cost each berth was roughly $660,000.

In light of the present economic climate, which is marked by both volatility and complacency, the majority of cruise lines have opted to refurbish their existing ships rather than construct new ones. It is possible that the cost of ship rehabilitation programs and refurbishing projects for cruise lines would reach close to half a billion dollars.
- Among the most mind-boggling examples of huge spending on fleet upgrades are Holland America’s SOE (“Signature of Excellence”) program (with a budget of USD 450 million) and Carnival’s Fun Ship 2.0 upgrades and ship enhancements.
- Both of these programs are aimed at improving the cruise lines’ fleets (total budget USD 800 million).
In most cases, these kind of refurbishments consist of either significant refits and enhancements (sometimes known as “upgrades” of older vessels with the company’s hallmark facilities, services, and programs) or regularly planned drydock refurbishments.

Spending time on the open ocean – According to Katz, who solely covers Carnival, the cruise industry operates in a manner that is in direct competition with the hotel industry. In order to fill their ships to their maximum capacity, cruise lines typically offer discounts on tickets as the sailing date draws nearer.
- When it comes to hotels, rates almost always go up as the arrival date gets closer.
- This recovery has been unlike any other recovery that anyone else has had,” he stated.
- No one else has ever experienced anything like this recovery.” In most cases, a traveler’s desire to go on a cruise is not influenced by the price, therefore he said that offering discounts could not result in an increase in the number of consumers.
In spite of this, many are shortening the amount of days they will stay on a cruise in order to avoid spending too much money. Three-night cruises on Disney’s Wish begin at a beginning price of $1,750 for two guests, while four-night cruises begin at a starting price of $2,250.
When passengers choose cruises that are connected to holidays like Halloween or Christmas, these rates go up. The base pricing for a Disney cruise is generally regarded as being a little bit more expensive than the base pricing for a cruise on Carnival or Royal Caribbean; however, if guests choose to upgrade to larger cabins or add food packages or experiences to their itineraries, the prices become quite comparable.

Regarding it, I have a very high level of assurance.” Before D’Amaro took over as president of the division five years ago, Disney made the choice to expand its fleet of cruise ships by adding additional vessels. The expansion features The Wish in addition to two other boats that have not yet been given names but are scheduled to make their debut in 2024 and 2025 respectively.
According to CLIA, the typical cost of manufacturing a cruise ship is around $617 million. However, it is projected that it will cost closer to $1 billion to manufacture bigger boats such as Disney’s Wish. Disney does not wish to disclose the amount of money it spent on the expansion of its fleet.
D’Amaro is quoted as having remarked, “I think the Wish is going to be another one of those lighthouses that beckons to the globe and tells people that sailing is a particular thing to do with your family.” “We have a really positive outlook on it.” Even though the Wish has traditional amenities that are standard on cruise lines, such as upscale restaurants, pools, spas, and gaming rooms for kids, Disney has integrated storytelling into these services to bring them up to the “magic” level that the company requires for its offerings to be considered “magical.” The Wish, which is captained by Minnie Mouse, has a variety of dramatic dining experiences, stage shows in the manner of Broadway, and the very first Disney attraction ever to be located at sea.
“With the Wish, we had the chance to think about, ‘What are the things we can do that can be new and different and firsts?’ – and there’s a big list,” D’Amaro said. “What are the things we can do that can be new and different and firsts?”

There is not a single cruise company that constructs its ships in the United States, and this holds true for everything from the newest mega ship from Royal Caribbean to a super yacht for SilverSea and everything in between.
Why is it the case? When United States Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) proposed legislation that would permanently allow foreign flagged cruise ships to sail to Alaska without having to make a stop in Canada, she included a condition that would eliminate the bill once there is a U.S.-built ship that carries more than 1,000 passengers.
This condition would only apply if United States shipbuilders ever aspired to build cruise ships. The fact that contemporary cruise ships are not constructed in the United States is brought to light by the stipulation that Senator Murkowski included in the bill.
- The majority of shipyards that construct cruise ships are located in Europe.
- Notable examples of these shipyards are Meyer Werft in Germany and Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France.
- Over the course of the company’s history, each and every one of Royal Caribbean’s ships has been constructed in a shipyard located in Europe.
I asked retired United States Coast Guard Commander Don Goldstein, who has over 32 years of experience working in the cruise business, why ships are not built in the United States. Commander Goldstein is a veteran of the cruise industry. The high costs associated with building cruise ships in the United States are, as you may have guessed, the fundamental reason why cruise ships are not built in the United States.
How much does a Disney cruise ship cost to build?
According to data provided by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), a trade association for the worldwide cruise industry, over eighty percent of tourists who have cruised in the past have stated that they will cruise again, which is the same percentage who traveled before the epidemic.
According to projections made by CLIA, the year 2022 will serve as a transition year for the cruise industry, and the year 2023 will mark the beginning of a full recovery. A passenger traffic recovery of more than 12% over 2019 levels is forecasted to occur by the time the year 2026 comes to a close.
The possibility of the cruise sector making a comeback is something about which Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney parks, experiences, and products, has “zero fear.” “Could the path be a little rougher than usual in the near future? Yes, “he said. “But am I familiar with the location of the destination? Absolutely.
According to CLIA, the typical cost of manufacturing a cruise ship is around $617 million; however, it is projected that it will cost closer to $1 billion for larger boats such as Disney’s Wish.
