Can a campervan be constructed on a limited budget?

“How much did your campervan cost?” is the question we are typically asked first when we discuss van living. We are breaking out all of our campervan construction expenditures. We also highlight budget-friendly solutions to convert a van while showcasing a few swanky improvements that are on our wish list.

It’s amusing because practically every time we publish a picture of our campervan, we receive comments or messages asking, “How much did your campervan cost?” It may be a photo with a profound statement or a topic that provokes serious thinking, yet people still want to ask us about money. And we get it.

Money is really important. We are quite open about our financial situation. In fact, we are so upfront that we disclose our actual income as travel writers. We have no hesitation in disclosing how much our campervan conversion cost. However, and this is a crucial issue, we don’t want to disclose a statistic out of context and scare them away.

  • Vanlife is not exclusive to the affluent.
  • Building a campervan does not have to cost tens of thousands of dollars.
  • We are adamant that you can design the campervan of your dreams on any budget.

We are evidence. Yes, absolutely.

  • First Campervan: In 2017, when we constructed our first campervan, we were flat broke. We were resourceful and made the most of our really limited funds (wait until you hear how little we spent!). Nevertheless, living in that ultra-cheap campervan was one of the best moments of our life.
  • Second Campervan: For the construction of our second campervan, we had significantly more funds available and had “upgrades” in mind that we could now afford. Thus, the budget for our second construction project was significantly more expensive.

While we like our current campervan construction, we will always have a special place in our hearts for our first (very basic) build. If you, too, have a restricted budget, we want you to know that it is totally possible to make your #vanlife fantasies a reality.
