As a teenager growing up in Mumbles in South Wales I was attracted by the water and loved to surf, swim, and sail. After crewing with one of my dad’s friends, I saved up to buy my own Mirror dinghy, which I adored.

I sailed heavily in my teens and then started cruiser racing. I relocated to Hampshire in England in 1986, where I met my wife-to-be Julie at a sailing club. When did you begin designing? I studied painting at school—my mother was an art teacher and artist—and obtained a degree in product design.

After finishing college I applied for a position at Camper & Nicholsons, I was lucky enough to draw up boat designs from the likes of Andrew Winch, so learnt a lot. Having worked for Camper & Nicholsons and been a partner at another yacht design business, I decided it was time to go out on my own.

We had a small family at the time, so it was a significant decision, but I have never regretted it. What services does the business provide? We provide interior design, exterior design, and interior decoration services. Typically, this entails developing the yacht’s main layout, picturing the areas for the customer, and incorporating their ideas to produce an unified and unique appearance.

It is essential to discover just how they want to utilize their boat. We create mood boards and hand drawings and agree on the project’s direction. This enables us to create technical joinery drawings, finalize layouts, and collaborate closely with the customer to select finishes for all parts of the boat.

Once this is accomplished, we handle the construction process, supervise the activities at the shipyard, and assure the delivery of a magnificent boat. Describe some of your more unique undertakings. We were required to suspend a chandelier over the dining table in the salon of a 152-foot yacht, so we rigged this to swivel (move with the motion of the boat). In addition, clients have requested that we include yoga facilities, saunas, custom galley storage for every item, stunning artwork, and even a studio grand piano.

Each guest cabin on the Mirage is designed after an artistic trend. Themes included expressionism, surrealism, and cubism. On the ultramodern superyacht Bliss, Design Unlimited integrated a sleek and well-appointed galley with breakfast bar. What is the key to excellent yacht interior design? Exceptional interior design is always subjective, as is the case with other design disciplines.

We have performed extensive work on smaller production boats, and the key to their success is a design that is both functional and seaworthy. But personalized superyachts must be precisely what the customer has always envisioned, down to the smallest detail.

  1. Have Design Unlimited’s creations a distinct aesthetic? We take pleasure in the absence of a house style.
  2. We have designed several designs ranging from timelessly classic to contemporary, simple, and outgoing.
  3. The Design Unlimited aesthetic should be unique and contemporary in each instance.
  4. Cowes on the Isle of Wight is the location of Cowes Week, the oldest and largest sailing race.

  2. Where do you live? We live in Hampshire’s Lee-on-the-Solent.
  3. Cowes is located across the Solent, which divides the Isle of Wight from the mainland, from Lee.

Locally, East Head in Chichester Harbour and Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight are our favorite spots, but we aim to take a boating family vacation each year and like the West Country. We adore Salcombe in Devon, but my top choices in Cornwall would be the Helford River and Fal Estuary. If you are new to the industry, you will begin as a deckhand or stewardess, for example. This implies you may have to work with a supervisor who is 15 to 20 years younger than you. However, working with a boss who is younger than you should not deter you completely, and whether you are 20 years old, 30 years old, or older than 40, establishing a career in the superyacht business is a fantastic concept that you should consider thoroughly.

Is the age of forty too old to work on a yacht?

Am I Too Old for a Yachting Career? Considering a job in yachting and wondering whether you are too old to work aboard a yacht? This article is for you. Check out for a step-by-step guide to getting started in the superyacht sector. To provide an overview, the industry is comprised of individuals from many walks of life and ages.

In addition, there are approximately 10,000 superyachts in the world. Each boat is unique, and each program is unique. This “Standard” you may have in mind for the ideal superyacht crew is NOT applicable to every single vessel on the market. Due to the nature of the sector, you may experience age discrimination, but it does not imply you will be unable to get the position you seek.

Yes yacht crew are often younger since they are keen to travel, make money, have no responsibilities at home, and are eager to learn the ropes. They are often vivacious and may be instructed from the outset of their yachting careers on how to operate the vessels’ many systems.

  • I have been on boats where the youngest crew member was 18 years old and others where the youngest crew member was 24 years old.
  • However, this does not imply that you must be under 30 to begin sailing.
  • My four suggestions are: Demonstrate the maturity and resolve to complete the task for the long haul.

Employees will want to see that you are committed to making this a career decision and not a “life crisis” Use your CV to demonstrate that you have the life and professional experience, as well as the work ethic, that the wrestling business is seeking.

Your excellent personality and maturity, together with your talents, are what will get you employed, thus keep this in mind for your CV and any interview + networking opportunities. Try targeting smaller vessels with permanent long-term crews, as new aspiring yachtsmen are less likely to want to work on these vessels, resulting in less competition.

Some vessels prefer elder crew members with greater life experience! To provide context, I began when I had just turned 26. I was able to advance more quickly, and my relationships with my chief stews were always excellent. When you are a bit older and dare I say ‘wiser,’ you don’t get caught up in the drama of the boat, and you know how to communicate effectively and get the work done with less supervision.

Unfortunately, this is a predominantly image-driven and ageist sector, therefore you will likely be passed up for a younger crew member. Therefore, if you choose to pursue it, you must accept this and retain a good attitude! If you are questioning whether you are too old to begin yachting, consider the following factors.

Will it be difficult for you to report to junior officers and the chief stews? Are you physically healthy and able to fulfill the physical requirements of the job, such as long hours and moving heavy objects, plus a lot of stair climbing if you’re a stew? Are you willing to begin from scratch? Unless you have appropriate land-based experience or abilities, every green crew member will be required to begin in a junior position.

  1. Are you committed enough to attempt it! There is seldom a simple road to get employment onboard.
  2. Remember that you do not need to match this model of younger crew; there are many boats out there with crew members aged 30 or older.
  3. You are not too old for yachting, but you should still be prepared for a potentially more difficult job search.

People will need to meet and get to know you in order to determine whether you are qualified for the position: Am I Too Old for a Yachting Career?
