Balance is a principle of interior design that visually stabilises a space. The definition of balance describes it as the harmonious arrangement of components – it ensures that no single element in a room overpowers another in terms of visual weight or dominance.
What is design balance?
Balance in design refers to how the visual weight of parts on both sides of a design are balanced to generate cohesion, completeness, and pleasure. To attain ideal balance, a composition must be balanced vertically, horizontally, diagonally, and between the background and foreground.
- Objects
- Colors (value, hue, saturation, transparency) (value, hue, saturation, transparency)
- Textures (smooth versus rough) (smooth versus rough)
- Space
- Still versus moving
Contrast, unity, focus, and in the case of this article, balance, are just a few of the numerous graphic design elements that you should consider while creating any design. The following five forms of balance are discussed:
- Symmetrical
- Asymmetrical
- Radial
- Mosaic
- Discordant
But first, a word on visual weight and its relationship to graphic design balance.
If one side of the room is burdened down by heavy furniture or decor, the space will feel unbalanced. Add something on the opposite side of the room to draw the attention across and around it. For instance, if one wall features a towering bookcase and an abundance of wall décor, ensure that the opposite wall also features something tall and prominent.
How can you achieve color harmony in a room?
How does the 60-30-10 Rule work? – It is a guideline of interior design that helps develop a color palette for a room.60% of the space should be the dominating color, 30% should be the secondary color or texture, and 10% should be the accent color.
